Skal International continued its strong commitment today supporting sustainability by addressing energy conservation in air travel.

Skal World President Burcin Turkkan of Atlanta, Georgia, said: “It is a fact that aviation connects people and is fundamental to the world economy. The warnings on energy consumption and its effects on global warming, however, are very clear. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says the effects of global warming are widespread and intensifying. Additionally, reports by the World Economic Forum, Shell Oil, and Deloitte all say that aviation is responsible for approximately 3% of global warming.”

Turkkan continued: “Corporations with net-zero global warming aspirations represent a total annual revenue of US$11.4 trillion, more than half of the annual US gross domestic product (GDP), according to the United Nations. Airlines can join this group of corporations and respond to this growing consumer demand for net-zero global warming by adopting Sustainable Fuel Aviation practices, high-quality carbon offsets, or a combination of the two.”

Skal International supports the efforts to achieve net-zero aviation emissions and believes that widespread stakeholder cooperation is needed to achieve the aviation industry goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Turkkan concluded, “In 2023, Skal International will assign its Advocacy and Global Partnerships Committee and its nkwado Subcommittee to educate our members on this important topic and develop programming for Skal to become an active advocate to achieve net-zero aviation emissions by 2050. Skal International believes that being the premiere international travel and tourism association with over 13,000 members in more than 85 countries that it is not only national governments and world leaders who must respond to this challenge, but the travel industry itself. Skal is positioned to take a major role in doing so and will address this critical issue as a leading industry policy advocate.”
