A plane with 126 passengers on board and 11 crew members crash landed at Miami International Airport and caught on fire at 5:30 pm local time today, Tuesday, June 21, 2022. The flight had taken off from Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Red Air flight 203, a passenger McDonnell Douglas MD-82 aircraft, was attempting to land when something went wrong with the aircraft’s landing gear. Upon touching down, the airplane’s landing gear collapsed, and the aircraft ran into objects on the runway, caught on fire, and veered off into a grassy area.

The airplane ran into a communications radar tower as well as a small building, causing severe damage to both structures. The tower became wrapped around the right wing of the aircraft which is also where the fire ignited.

The fire was rapidly put out using foam trucks by fire rescue crews on the scene after which time the aircraft was able to be evacuated.

Most of those onboard were not injured, but 4 passengers had minor injuries with 3 of them being taken to a local hospital for medical attention. In images, it looks like the aircraft ended up on its belly.

Runways 9 and 12 located on the south end of Miami International near the 836 Expressway are currently closed.

The accident is under investigation and landing gear is being inspected.

Due to the runway closures, other flights may be affected. Passengers planning to depart or later arrive from Miami International a strongly encouraged to check on their flights.

Red Air had just announced that it would increasing flights between Santo Domingo and Miami to up to three flights per day starting on July 25, 2022.
