Hurricane Earl will affect travel on US East Coast

Hurricane Earl is expected to make air travel difficult on the East Coast of the United States, possibly forcing some delays and cancellations of flights at airports in the region, including Newark Liberty International Airport.

According to the National Weather Service, a hurricane warning has been issued from Bogue Inlet, North Caroline, northeastward to the North Carolina/Virginia border, including the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds.

A hurricane watch was adjusted and now extends from the North Carolina/Virginia border northward to Cape Henlopen, Delaware. A tropical storm warning has been issued from Cape Fear to West of Bogue Inlet.

AIRTRAN AIRWAYS

AirTran Airways is offering passengers booked to/from affected airports from September 1 through September 4, 2010, the option to change their reservation without penalty. AirTran Airways customers traveling to/from the following airports may use this penalty-free option: San Juan, Puerto Rico; Richmond, VA; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Asheville, NC; Newport News-Williamsburg, VA; Washington DC (Dulles and Reagan); Baltimore-Washington; New York; Philadelphia; and Boston. Passengers may adjust their travel plans to an alternate date starting one day prior to their original travel day through three days after their original travel date.

The easiest way to utilize this free option is via AirTran Airways’ web site, www.airtran.com. Click on the reservations tab and follow steps for these complimentary changes. Passengers without Internet access may contact the airline at 1-800-AIR-TRAN.

The airline will continue to monitor the situation and make additional adjustments to its flight schedule as necessary.

Delta Air Lines is offering customers whose flight plans may be affected by weather from Hurricane Earl the ability to make one-time changes to their travel schedules without fees. Delta’s weather advisory encourages customers to consider postponing or re-routing their travel to avoid possible inconvenience from expected East Coast flight delays.

Customers booked on Delta-ticketed flights to, from or through the following cities, on Thursday and Friday, September 3-4 may make a one-time change to their travel schedule without fees. Customers may immediately rebook for travel before or after their original travel dates as long as new flights are ticketed by September 11, 2010: Baltimore; Bangor, Maine; Boston; Charlottesville, Va.; Hartford, Conn.; Jacksonville, N.C.; Manchester, N.H.; Nantucket, Mass.; Newark, N.J.; New Bern, N.C.; Newburgh, N.Y.; Newport News / Williamsburg, Va.; New York (JFK/LGA); Norfolk, Va.; Philadelphia; Portland, Maine; Providence, R.I.; Richmond, Va.; Washington D.C. Flight delays are possible Sept. 3-4 as a result of Hurricane Earl, and Delta may proactively reduce flight schedules to minimize delays. All customers should check their flight status at delta.com before arriving at the airport.
Travel for changed itineraries must begin by Sept. 11, 2010, and changes to origin and destination may result in a fare increase. Any fare difference between the original ticket and the new ticket will be collected at the time of rebooking. Customers whose flights are cancelled may request refunds.

JETBLUE

JetBlue Airways Corporation will waive change fees and fare differences to allow customers booked for travel to or from select destinations between September 2 and 4, 2010. Prior to their originally scheduled departure, customers can voluntarily rebook for flights through Tuesday, September 14, 2010 by calling 1-800-JET-BLUE.

Customers traveling to or from the following destinations between September 2 and 4 are eligible to rebook their travel prior to their originally scheduled departure: Baltimore, Md. (BWI); Bermuda (BDA); Boston (BOS); Charlotte, N.C. (CLT); Nantucket, Mass.
